Trow Farm, which is adjacent to Slade House Farm, is the largest of all our farms with an enormous 106 hectares (261 acres) and is managed by Alan Brown with 7 full-time staff. The farm was purchased in 1997 and is mainly agricultural based providing the hay and straw for donkeys on the other farms.
After new barns were built, the farm received its first resident donkeys in 2002. Today it has about 250 donkeys (including our resident donkeys, mules, ponies and horses down at Hurfords which is also part of Trow Farm).
The farm has many activities going on:
- Main collection point for recycling plastic and paper from the Sanctuary.
- Generating compost from the dung and wood chippings from the farms.
- Willow beds for cleaning dirty water.
- Training area for staff undergoing vehicle familiarisation working closely with Health & Safety.
As with all our farms, there are always donkeys with characters. Trow Farm boasts quite a few, but top of the list would be Scruffy who came into the Sanctuary in 2002. She is full of character and likes to nudge the vet nurse while she is treating her companions!
One of the grooms says:"Scruffy is a cheeky little donkey and likes to queue up first to get through the gate and into the field where she can happily play with all the other donkeys."
Another donkey with character is Harvey who came into the Sanctuary in 2006. He had been working as a beach donkey in Blackpool and has now retired. At 20 years of age, Harvey is one of the youngest donkeys to be found at Trow Farm, where generally our older donkeys are cared for, due to his arthritic hips.
