Why does a donkey roll?

Donkeys love to roll in dusty spots, particularly after being lovingly groomed by our carers! They will create a rolling patch by pawing at the ground to remove the grass where there is sandy soil; each donkey patiently waiting his turn to roll on the same spot!

Last week I was at work particularly early one morning to watch some new arrivals from Ireland coming off the lorry and into their new home. The sun hadn't been up long and the birds were singing so I took a walk around the Sanctuary and sat for an hour watching Rosie, Francesca, Karray and Janet.

If you were watching the webcam yesterday morning (9th July), you may have seen Colin trimming a couple of donkeys' hooves on the yard.

The two donkeys were Matt Jay and Billy who were both having their four weekly hoof trimmings while Emma held them.

At 11am today (2nd July), I will be participating in a live interview with local radio station Exeter FM. Accompanying me is Alan Tibbitts, a film maker, as we will be talking about the Sanctuary's new promotional DVD, The Donkey Sanctuary... 40 years on.

During a recent visit Town Barton Farm, one of our outlying farms on the outskirts of Dartmoor National Park, I was handed this video clip from Elizabeth, one of the grooms who help care for our rescued charges there.

Nicolas II came into the Sanctuary in May 2009. Although he's only five years of age, he's already showing us how intelligent he is - he's worked out how to open doors!
