Information Sheet No. 10 – Donkey Care

At the Donkey Sanctuary some donkeys are very shy, so special donkey friends are found to look after these timid animals.  Other donkeys are frail and elderly; therefore it is important these donkeys are not put into groups, which they would find frightening e.g. young, boisterous donkeys.  However, older donkeys are sometimes used as ‘carers’ to look after younger donkeys, showing them how to behave and to keep them in order.

A group of blind donkeys is kept at the Donkey Sanctuary.  Although change of routine and environment can stimulate young donkeys, with this group, it is important their surroundings do not change, as this would be distressing and disorientating.  Water troughs, food buckets, hay and straw etc., are kept in the same place for this reason.
