It is difficult to realise how bad the conditions of some donkeys are in Spain and Portugal. We have rescued some donkeys that have been mistreated so much that their recovery is very hard to achieve. We had Bono with his lost leg, and now we have Margarita and Flor, two poor mares rescued in Madrid from a gipsy camp.
They were relinquished by Madrid's local police and picked up and cared for by AMIBURRO, a local association that cooperates with us in that area. They have given first aid to both donkeys until they were in a condition to travel to our refuge. The condition of Margarita was terrible. Although she had been under treatment for two months she still had large sores all over her body. Her hooves were so bad that she could hardly walk or stand up. Sadly, we had to make the decision to put Margarita to sleep but at least her last weeks of life were more comfortable. |
