In November 2002, we heard about a donkey in Greece who had been attacked by louts and had both of her ears hacked off and her back savagely mauled with a shovel.
The people who rescued Hope and her friend could not look after them and wanted to know if we could take them into our care. We would not normally be able to travel so far to rescue a donkey but in this case we did manage to rescue both donkeys along with four others from Kosovo who had been used for smuggling (that's another story!) and bring them all safely back to our temporary holding base in France.
Because of the similar climate we decided to bring the donkeys to Spain and it was a very emotional moment for Paul Svendsen who had first seen her in Greece, to finally see her come down the ramp of the lorry to her new safe home with us. |
