The Donkey Sanctuary is a UK based charity working worldwide to improve conditions for donkeys and mules.

A foal is born

Meet Freya

In March of this year a lovely skewbald mare called Tricia came to us with friends Joanne and Stripe. Tricia was in foal on her arrival and gave birth to a beautiful brown filly in August - we called her Freya. Visitors to the Sanctuary can find Freya and her mum Tricia in amongst the oldie group adjacent to the Visitor Information Centre at Liscarroll.

Come and visit

Donkeys grazing

The Sanctuary is set in the beautiful rolling countryside of County Cork just outside the village of Liscarroll in Ireland.

We have taken in over 2,500 donkeys rescued from all parts of the country. Many donkeys have been abandoned or put in a field and given little or no attention after having worked for their owners for years, hauling peat or pulling a cart. We strongly believe that their suffering should cease.

Nuala

Orphaned at ten days, Sanctuary staff found Nuala in danger of starvation without her mother's milk and her owner unable to find a vet who could help. A rare congenital condition has robbed her of her sight as her eyes are undeveloped. She will now enjoy specialist care with other blind donkeys at the Sanctuary here in Ireland where she is slowly settling in.
