Working WorldwideEgypt

working at the pyramidsThe Donkey Sanctuary working in Egypt

Early in 2003 we commenced our activities in the Faisal area of Giza, about half an hour's drive from the Pyramids. An Egyptian society was formed - The Society for the Protection and Welfare of Donkeys and Mules in Egypt - and a co-operation agreement was signed to allow us to work in Egypt. The project is headed by Dr. Mourad Ragheb, as our project leader, who is helped by an animal health assistant and a driver. At our headquarters in Faisal, Giza, the office is run by an administrator.

In 2004 the project expanded to two mobile vehicles visiting various sites 5 days a week to give treatments to the donkeys presented by their owners. The main areas for treatment are harness wounds and hoof problems.  Donkey owners are also advised how to achieve improvements in their donkeys’ health.

Waiting for treatmentWe are also working in collaboration with Moshotour Veterinary College and their final year veterinary students are accompanying the mobile vehicle on a rota basis to "see practice" in the field.

Teeth raspingAs with all Donkey Sanctuary overseas projects, children’s education on donkey welfare is a further priority area for development. Expansion costs money, and The Donkey Sanctuary relies totally on donations from the general public, companies or charitable trusts. Just a small donation can make all the difference between life and death for the donkeys in Egypt - especially those working in the brick kilns.
