With over 7 million donkeys, China has by far the greatest donkey numbers in the world today. In 2006, The Donkey Sanctuary was invited to China to take a look at donkeys and mules throughout the country.

In 2007, we established a subsidiary organisation called The Donkey Sanctuary Cyprus to enable us to take over from the Friends of the Cyprus Donkey.

Our work in Italy began in April 2004 when we rescued 21 donkeys from terrible conditions at a bankrupt zoo in Naples, the result of an urgent appeal from Italian animal welfare association called Nata Libera.
